Maryvale offers a nationally recognized, best-in-class Leadership curriculum that touches every student on campus.
Leadership Starts at Maryvale
Leadership education for girls has been at the center of the Maryvale experience for nearly 80 years. Since our founding, we have been empowering young women leaders at every grade level with leadership skills and hands-on leadership experience.
Ten years ago, Maryvale launched The Leadership Institute, our signature academic leadership program. We’re the first independent girls’ school leadership program in the Baltimore region. Named in 2023 for Patricia J. Mitchell ’65, Maryvale’s first woman and alumna president of the Board of Trustees, the Mitchell Leadership Institute encompasses academic training, real-life experience, and immense opportunity to develop exemplary leadership skills that will catapult young women ahead in college, career, and life.
I learned to lead at
Maryvale. I am incredibly
pleased to endow this
unique aspect and
value of the Maryvale
experience to ensure
our young women have
the opportunity to build
their self-confidence to
lead and to serve in
their careers, in their
communities, and
throughout their lives.
- Patricia J. Mitchell
Maryvale’s renowned Leadership Institute was named in the spring of 2023 in honor of Patricia J. Mitchell from Maryvale’s Class of 1965. Ms. Mitchell attended Maryvale for twelve years starting in the first grade, continuing her education at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland (now Notre Dame of Maryland University), and becoming a teacher at Pinewood Elementary School in Baltimore County. In 1974, she joined IBM as a Systems Engineer and retired as the Vice President of IBM Global Sales Operations. Ms. Mitchell joined the Maryvale Board of Trustees in 1989 and in 1996 became the first woman and first graduate to Chair the Maryvale Board.
The Mitchell family has been dedicated to Maryvale's mission for over 70 years. All of Ms. Mitchell’s siblings attended Maryvale. Members of the Mitchell family have been generous in their philanthropic support of the school, including the EXCEL and In Her Name Capital Campaigns as well as naming the athletic field scoreboard in honor of Edward J. and Marie McNamee Mitchell. Ms. Mitchell’s recent gift to Maryvale comes full circle in naming the Patricia J. Mitchell ’65 Leadership Institute.
