Maryvale educators are committed to the students in their care, both in and out of the classroom, in an effort to offer each student a sense of belonging at Maryvale. With this goal in mind, increasing awareness about the ways students learn, interact, and are perceived is as much a part of professional development as is pedagogy and teaching innovation.

Faculty Spotlight: Marlena Murtagh
Archdiocese of Baltimore's Independent School Teacher of the Year

Marlena’s passion as a teacher is infectious. She inspires her students to see the world through a creative lens, and helps them to develop the courage and skills to tell their unique stories through their art.

- Dr. Donna Hargens, Superintendent of Archdiocese of Baltimore's Catholic Schools

Marlena leads with compassion and empathy first and foremost, as a human and as a teacher. When you combine that with her sense of humor, brains, diligence, generosity and, of course, creativity, you can begin to understand what a wonderful human being she is.

- Jennifer Nicholas, Upper School Head

My students at Maryvale are unlike any others, and it’s such an honor to work with them. My classroom is constantly full of laughter and creative thinking. Whether it’s a simple sketchbook assignment or an interior design project, the students are excited to be making artwork. Their kindness is contagious and their joy even more so.

The GROW (Gathering Reflection while Observing the World) Grant, established by Jennifer Hanley Armstrong ’00 and Gregory Armstrong, provides a financial award to deserving faculty or staff members at Maryvale. This grant award is used towards the personal or professional enrichment of a faculty or staff member. Knowing that educational enrichment and travel experiences (both domestic and international travel) rejuvenate and motivate educators, it is expected that this award will directly benefit the educational experience of Maryvale students.
