The work of Inclusion and Belonging at Maryvale is not just a concept, but a call to action for all community members. We strive for inclusive excellence, guided by the values of the Hallmarks of the Notre Dame de Namur Sisters.
These values are not just words, but principles that inspire and motivate us to act and educate on behalf of justice, peace, and care for all creation. Our commitment to the Inclusion and Belonging work is not a choice, but a responsibility that we actively embrace, as we honor and respect the dignity and sacredness of each person.
Every Voice Matters at Maryvale
The work is not confined to the Office of Mission and Ministry, but permeates all facets of the Maryvale community. Our engagement is not limited to the classroom, but includes all community members, creating a sense of unity and shared purpose.
Affinity Spaces
- Asian Student Association: ASA explores the East Asian countries (Japan, South Korea, etc.) and learns about their cultures. Activities include eating the countries' native food, listening to their popular music, and learning some of their language.
- Black Student Union: BSU discusses with and educates its members, as well as the wider community, about African American culture and its impact on society. They also focuses on creating unity between African American students.
- PRISM: PRISM’s mission is to work on a more inclusive environment for all people. We seek to provide a safe, non-judgmental stance as a support for LGBTQ+ youth and their allies who share a common vision of social equality. Students participate in educational opportunities and community building activities.
- Sabor Latina: This space allows students to share experiences as Latinx people. They educate the broader community about the Hispanic/Spanish culture and dive into the history.
- Women's Equality Initiative: This is a leadership movement focused on the disparities in gender equality that women encounter. The goal of this group is to advocate for women’s equality, foster the development of independent-minded female thinkers, empower and support women in the local community, and develop skills that make us effective advocates.
