Parent Education Resources
Research proves that parent involvement in their children's academic and personal lives is a big predictor of student success.
This page is meant to serve as a resource center for parents to gain further insight about trending adolescent health and wellness topics as well as provide support when addressing difficult subject matters. If at any time you have a question about a new topic or area of concern, or would like to schedule a meeting with one of Maryvale's school counselors, please contact one of Maryvale's two full-time school counselors who are available to provide support services to all students. Mrs. Claire Doyle is the counselor for students in grades 6-9 and Mrs. Hillary Horgan is the counselor for students in grades 10-12.
During distance learning, in-person learning and hybrid learning, Mrs. Doyle and Mrs. Horgan work closely with students, parents and faculty to meet social, emotional, academic and personal needs in the Maryvale community. Services offered include short-term counseling, educational and future planning and interpretation and assessment of standardized test scores and other academic data. They also coordinate developmentally appropriate programming to help educate students and parents on pertinent social and mental health issues.
Students may seek support themselves or they may be referred by parents or teachers for counseling services. During distance learning, Mrs. Doyle and Mrs. Horgan will email students to arrange a Zoom meeting and copy a parent on the correspondence. Parents are not required to join the Zoom meeting unless the student desires. Partnership with families is a valuable component in supporting student success and parents are encouraged to communicate with their child's counselor when issues arise. In order to facilitate an effective counseling relationship, a student's confidentiality is protected, except in situations where a student discloses risk of harm to themselves or others. In these situations, parents will be notified and appropriate action will be taken to protect the student. Mrs. Doyle and Mrs. Horgan will not share confidential student information with other members of the community, unless explicitly given permission to do so by the student and parent(s).
Please don't hesitate to reach out to either Mrs. Doyle or Mrs. Horgan with questions or concerns throughout the school year. No issue is too small! These are high-stress times for everyone, as we are experiencing circumstances unlike anything we have faced previously. Mrs. Doyle and Mrs. Horgan look forward to getting to know you and your daughters and having a wonderful school year!
