The BURKIES is Maryvale’s answer to Broadway’s Tony or Hollywood’s Oscar. The BURKIES are an end-of-year celebration of the performing arts at Maryvale and a tradition from the Class of 1999, affectionately named after director, Nancy Burkhart. These little gold statuettes are highly prized by our young performers, their families and friends.
Each year, following Maryvale’s mainstage productions, audience members and the Maryvale community are given the opportunity to vote on an online ballot for categories such as “best actress,” “best choreography,” “best crew member,” or “best female interpretation of a male role.”
The BURKIES are presented during our spring concert of the Instrumental Ensemble and the Maryvale Choruses. As in the Tonys or the Oscars, nominees are presented as we see their pictures on the big screen in the auditorium. Short video excerpts from the shows are also shared. The cast and crew members are awarded a trophy to treasure!
In addition to the voted awards, awards are given to graduating seniors, parents and faculty volunteers. Senior members of the performing arts groups are honored in a special farewell blessing ceremony.
