Individualized Education

8:1 - Student-to-faculty ratio

At Maryvale, we understand that a one-size-fits all education may prevent girls from reaching their potential. That's why we have developed a unique model that offers a customized learning experience for each student.

With our manageable size, innovative teaching methods and flexible curriculum, we are able to provide the individualized approach each girl needs to excel in all aspects of her education - academic, spiritual and social.

This model allows each girl to become a confident, independent learner and leader for life. Our accomplished alumnae promise this approach lays the foundation for future success.

Academics

800 - Maryvale students' highest scores on the Critical Reading and Math sections of the SAT

Academic excellence is a Maryvale hallmark. From college preparatory classes to AP courses, we offer the right amount of rigor for the region’s brightest students. Whether it’s a Middle School timber framing project or an Upper School Engineering Through Robotics class, Maryvale emphasizes Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) at all levels.

Using the latest technology resources, every girl is challenged, stretched and afforded the opportunity to reach a potential … never thought possible. Just ask the Maryvale students who recently earned a perfect 800 score on portions of the SAT.

Leadership and Service

1,296 - Most community service hours logged by one Maryvale student in four years

At Maryvale, leading and serving are as connected as the girls and their friends. Servant leadership is fostered in an accepting environment where the possibility of reward outweighs the fear of failure. From social justice and Student Council to theater and athletics, opportunities to lead and serve exist at every corner of the campus. As part of the Maryvale Leadership Institute, Middle and Upper School students have the chance to participate in formal leadership training and companion community service outreach.

Traditions

19 - Notre Dame de Namur “sister” schools

Belief in God. Belief in community. Belief in yourself. One of 19 schools across the country affiliated with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Maryvale is rooted in Catholic beliefs but open to those of all religions. From theology lessons to regular prayer and Liturgy, faith rituals play an important part of student life and spiritual development. Whether it’s the annual May Crowning celebration, weekly Community Homeroom invocations or Gym Meet team-building, the Spirit is alive and well at Maryvale.

Athletics

- Championships won during a school year

Whether you are a newcomer to a sport or an accomplished athlete, Maryvale believes that all girls should participate in athletics to round out their educational experience. Lessons learned on our fields, track and courts can be applied to life beyond the Greenspring Valley campus.

The Maryvale Lions have proudly won numerous Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) championships, with a record-setting five titles in one school year. Also, our girls have been named All-Americans, IAAM All-Stars and “Athlete of the Week” by the Baltimore Sun, among other honors. Many continue to earn accolades and shatter records as they move on and become collegiate student athletes.

Arts

500 - Seats in McCarthy Theater

As the lead in a Maryvale production or as a participant in one of the school’s singing groups, students have numerous opportunities to take the stage. In both the Middle and Upper Schools, drama, theater technology, visual arts, digital arts, music, band and dance have become an important part of the curriculum and after-school activities. Throughout the arts, technology is infused to create modern works and prepare girls for the next generation of jobs.

Living Classroom

100+ - Acres for learning

Located on 100-plus acres in the gorgeous Greenspring Valley, Maryvale's college-like campus provides the perfect setting for a living classroom. Featuring an outdoor amphitheater, sprawling woods, nature trails and a waterfall, the grounds offer the ideal opportunity for collaborative learning, self-reflection and quite study.

Whether students are enjoying an English class in the amphitheater, tending to the lush Environmental Science gardens or filming on the Castle Terrace, outdoor learning is strongly encouraged and regularly incorporated within the curriculum.

Graduation

100 - Percent of all graduates proceed to college

Each Maryvale girl leaves her home away from home with the strong academic, leadership and extra-curricular foundation to guarantee a successful college career.

Capitalizing on these strengths, Maryvale’s college counselors help each student find the right fit for the next step in her academic journey. Recent acceptances include: Yale University, Cornell University, Duke University, University of Notre Dame (Indiana), Johns Hopkins University, Barnard College, Purdue University (College of Engineering) and Rochester Institute of Technology. Many of our girls receive merit and athletic scholarships to attend colleges and universities throughout the country.
